Many years ago, before SEO was even being offered as a service to small businesses, we embarked on this “internet thing” to see if we could make a living out of it.

Back then, all one needed to rank a website, was write, scrape or duplicate some content, create a couple of profile backlinks to the site and, depending on the keyword competition, have a website ranking on the first page of the major search engines within days, if not hours!

As internet marketers, we scoured the internet in search of products and information that was high in demand, wrote reviews on them, and sold the information/products as affiliates for Amazon, Clickbank and Commission Junction, to name a few.

This trend went on for so long, that a lot of marketers became too lazy, started “gaming” the system with black-hat methods, if you will, to increase their search engine rankings.

As with all free market enterprises, internet marketers abused the system to such an extent that, oft times, page 1 and #1 ranking websites were of regurgitated content users could not make sense of, prompting Google to manipulate their search engine algorithm so that only relevant, fresh and unique results would show whenever a user typed a keyword for their desired search.

To some, those were the good days but, since Google stepped in with a series of algorithm updates, the latest called the Panda/Farmer update, most of those internet marketers have since ceased doing business, as the web is now very competitive, and only those marketers with a sound working knowledge of the internet, and the know-how to rank websites, based on producing only the content buyers want to read, backlinks the search engines respect and reward you for, have survived.

When not behind our computers busy researching and implementing online campaigns, our pass-time is spent in the inner city of Portland, and at various traffic lights, engaging with the City’s homeless individuals, hearing their gut-wrenching stories, lending a helping hand wherever we can, without judgment, but always with an empowering and uplifting message.
